Navy opens fire on fishermen

The Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) shot at two fishermen off the Pesalai coast this morning, said sources. Thirunaavukarasu Mariyadas (46) and Pethuru Yesu Pavaliyappar (35) are from Thevanpiddy, a fishing village near Vellaankulam in the LTTE held areas of the areas of the Vanni.

They were first admitted to the Mannar hospital and later transferred to the Vavuniya hospital for further treatment.

The SLN personnel who had seen a boat coming from the LTTE held areas chased it and opened fire at the two fishermen. The two men were wounded and arrested by the SLN.

They were released after the SLN had completed their investigations.
