Vaazhaichcheanai parents, students protest against TMVP
[TamilNet, Tuesday, 30 November 2010, 08:57 GMT]
Students and parents of Vaazhaichcheanai in Batticaloa district Monday
protested against the decision by Piratheasa Chapai (PS) chairman S. Jeevagathas to close down private tuition centres in the area. This was the first time residents of Vaazhaichchenai held such demonstration against the TMVP, which is led by Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pilliayan who is also the Chief Minister of the
Eastern Provincial Council (EPC).
About thousand parents and students took to the streets Monday
afternoon against the order of Mr. Jeevagathas of TMVP to close down the private tuition centre “Sun Academy”, which is located along Peachchiyamman Veethi in Vaazhaichcheanai citing reason that the said centre was blocking the traffic. Meanwhile, informed sources told TamilNet that the tuition centre owner, M.Paththinithasan is likely to contest the forthcoming
local government election. Sri Lankan Police backing the paramilitary group is attempting to arrest the owner alleging that he was behind the Monday demonstration, the sources further said. More than thousand Tamil-speaking students study at the tuition centre. When the demonstrators went in procession from the tuition centre to
the office of Vaazhaichchenai PS office, its chairman Jeevagathas fled
from the office seeking security at the police station. A private tuition centre located along Kalkuda road was closed down
forcibly by the TMVP last year and the Sri Lankan police failed to take
action.
