Local elections to be held under old PR system
[TamilNet, Monday, 20 December 2010, 21:23 GMT]
Sri Lankan government has reportedly decided to use the present preferential representation (PR) system for the forthcoming elections to the local bodies. Citing delays and limited time to implement the proposed first-past-the-post system, being proposed by the government, Colombo government has decided to use the current system, media sources in Colombo said.
Under the proposed new system 75 percent of representatives will be
elected under the first-past-the-post system, and 25 percent will be
elected under the PR system. The recently introduced Local Authorities (Special Provisions) Bill and the Local Authorities Elections (Amendment), are to be taken up for debate on January 4 next year in Sri Lanka's parliament.
