35,000 persons affected by rain in Batticaloa district

More than thirty five thousand members of 7,200 families in eight DS divisions in Batticaloa district have been affected and over 15,000 houses are under water due to continuous torrential rain for the last six days. In the meantime, people affected by floods already, two weeks ago, complain that they have yet to receive relief and assistance from the government.
The normal life of people in Paduvaankarai area has come to a halt as they are forced to seek shelter in public buildings. The movement of people in resettled in villages, Koa’ralaipattu South, Vavu’natheevu and Vellaave’li has been curtailed due to floods. Public transport via Mannamppiddi (A 11) highway to outstations has been affected. An official of the Batticaloa District secretariat said 30 villages in the DS divisions of Koa’ralaippattu, Koa’ralaipattu Central, and Koa’ralaippattu South, Ea’raavoor, Chengkaladi, Vavu’natheeu, Vellaave’li, Ma’nmunai Sout Eruvilpattu and Ma’nmunaipattu are under floodwater.
