Refugee numbers escalate in flood-striken Batticaloa

Two hundred and fifteen thousand persons from 58,000 families have been affected by continuous rain in the Batticaloa district, according to Disaster Management Department (DMD) sources. Acting Coordinator of the DMD, Mr.A.M.M.Hasir, said that villages in thirteen DS divisions are under water and road that leads to Paduvaangkarai has been completely submerged in flood waters disabling all transport to the mainland.
2995 persons from 750 families in Era’voor Paththu, Chengkaladi and Koralaipaththu North DS divisions displaced due to flood following torrential rain have been sheltered in public buildings in eleven locations. Cooked meals are being supplied to these refugees by the Social Service Department and non-governmental organizations in the district, DMD spokesperson said.
