Kumaraswamy Nageswaran, President of the Association of Champoor Uprooted Tamil Families, was assaulted by a group of unidentified gang posing as police personnel on Sunday night around 11.30 p.m. at Kaddaiparichchan, a resettled village in Moothoor East, according to a complaint by his relatives at Champoor Police Station. Nageswaran sustained severe injuries in his legs, was first taken to the Moothoor base hospital and later transferred to Trincomalee general hospital Monday morning.
According to the complaint, a gang of persons had gone to the residence of Nageswaran and wanted him to come out to discuss certain matters. When Nageswaran came out he was assaulted. The gang fled from the scene when neighbors shouted for help. Thereafter residents of the area rushed to the Champoor police station and told the incident and made a complaint. The people dispersed on the assurance by the police that they would inquire into the incident and would arrest the culprits. Mr.Nageswaran contested the Trincomalee district at the last general election held in April last year on the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) ticket.
