India-bound refugees detained

[TamilNet, Monday, 24 May 1999, 06:08 GMT]
Seventy-seven Tamil refugees, including 25 women and 11 children, were detained by the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) yesterday when they attempted to cross over to India to seek refuge there.

The refugees had put out from Jaffna.

The SLN has brought the refugees to Thalaimannar for investigations. Sources said they will be sent to their hometowns after investigations are completed.

Tens of thousands of Tamils have sought refuge in the neighbouring India from the fighting on the island.

The earliest refugees to attempt the dangerous crossing did so following the anti-Tamil pogroms of 1983.
