Veteran journalist Sabaratnam passes away

Veteran journalist T. Sabaratnam passed away after a brief illness
on Saturday in Colombo at the age of 79. Mr. Sabaratnam, who held the post of senior deputy editor of the SL State run Daily News at the time of retirement in 1997, was contributing to the English weekly, the Nation and other English and Tamil newspapers after retirement from the Lake House newspapers. He worked as a lecturer in the College of Journalism since its inception till his demise.
Mr. Sabaratnam joined the Thinakaran, a Tamil newspaper of the Lake House founded
by late D.R.Wijewardene as a trainee-journalist in 1957. He functioned as a sub-editor of the Thinakaran later. He joined the Daily News
editorial in 1978 as a senior sub-editor. Besides, he was a lecturer in journalism at the Colombo University,
Open University and Sri Lanka College of Journalism. The Press Institute and the Editors Guild of Sri Lanka felicitated him for
the tremendous contribution to journalism. He was a veteran writer on scientific topics. The Tamil Media Association and Sri Lanka Muslim Media Forum in their condolence messages said the death of Mr. Sabaratnam is an irreparable loss to media community.
