Six PLOTE cadres on torture charges abscond, arrest warrant issued for SLA captain over indiscriminate firing incident and a Jaffna student is arrested.
SLA arrests Meesalai studentS.Jeganathan, 19, a student of 'Meesalai Veerasingham Mahavidyalayam', was arrested yesterday evening by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA). He is being detained at the Meesalai SLA camp, about 15 km. southeast of Jaffna town. SLA soldiers who had followed the student while he was returning from school arrested him at his house, said his family.
Torture suspects abscondThe Jaffna Magistrate issued arrest warrants on six PLOTE members who failed to appear in the courts yesterday. The six were arrested in connection with detention and torture of another PLOTE member, Abdhul Azees Akmahl. They had been released on bail. Meanwhile four other PLOTE members who are remanded in connection with the case were produced in the courts. The judge extended the remand to June 21.
SLA officer wanted over shootingThe magistrate in Eravur, K.Thatchanamoorthy ordered the police to arrest a Sri Lanka Army (SLA) Captain attached to the Morakkoddanchenai camp, in connection with the killing of Vigneswaray Kanthasamy. She was killed when SLA soldiers at one of the camp's sentry post fired indiscriminately, said residents in the area. An inquest was held at the Eravur hospital before the Magistrate. The magistrate ordered the arrest of the SLA captain and adjourned the inquest till tomorrow.
