Mannaar Court remands “grease devil” Navy sailor

[TamilNet, Thursday, 25 August 2011, 11:11 GMT]
A Sri Lanka Navy soldier caught by members of the public inside the Paddith-thoaddam Catholic Convent in Mannaar on Tuesday around 8 p.m. with a T-56 rifle and 120 live bullets was ordered remand till September by the Mannaar District Judge Ms K.Jeevaranee, legal sources in Mannaar said. The suspect has been identified as R.M.K.Prasath Bandara, a soldier of the SLN camp in Mannaar. Residents handed over the suspect to the Mannaar Police in the presence of Fr. Victor Jose.

Nuns, raised the alarm by loud cries, and alerted the residents of the area who rushed to the convent and took the suspect into custody.

Paddith-thoaddam Catholic Convent is located along Mannaar-Thaazhvuppaadu main road about 100 meters away from the SLN camp.

The Attorney-at-Law retained by the Sri Lanka Navy to watch the interests of the suspect submitted to court that the suspect had been caught by the public while he was attempting to desert from the SLN and the suspect was not a mysterious person called as “grease devil “.

The Attorney-at-Law further informed court that disciplinary action would be taken against the suspect-sailor by the Sri Lanka Navy once he was handed over to the SLN.

However the Judge rejected the bail application moved by the defense counsel and ordered remand till September 7, legal sources said.
