Vavuniya Red Cross committee resigns

The committee members of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society, Vavuniya branch, have resigned from their posts with effect from June 15, said sources. The resignations follow the arrests of: SLRC Vavuniya branch secretary and North - east co-ordinator, Sivanathan Kishore, Ronald Ramesh an office assistant and SLRC driver, Nagamany Easwaranathan.

The General Secretary of the SLRC in Colombo announced news of the resignations that was later relayed by the state radio station in its nightly bulletin.

The Chairman of the Vavuniya branch, C.Marcandeyar, said that the General Secretary had summoned the Vavuniya committee to Colombo and told them that he was going to suspend the committee following the arrest of three society members by the police.

Mr. Marcendayer further said that the committee had been working under trying conditions and the decision to resign had been made following the arrests.

He added that the arrests had cast suspicion on the whole organisation.

A team of SLRC official has left for Vavuniya from Colombo to asses the situation there following the resignations.
