Seven youths arrested in Jaffna

The Sri Lankan Army has arrested 7 youths from Valvettithurai, north of Jaffna, over the past two days, in connection with the killing of a police officer there on June 5.

The following four have been handed over to the CID and detained at the Kankesanthurai detention centre: Sinnaiah Atputharajah, Sinnathamby Krishnakumar, Rasanayagam Panchalingam and Sivarasa Sutharshan.

The others, Thivyaratnam Vijikumar, Thuraisingham Rasakumar and Kugathas Ajithkumar, are detained at the Valvettithurai Police station, said sources.

Meanwhile the Human Rights Commission in Jaffna said this morning that four youths have been reported 'missing' following a clash in the Nanthavil area of Kokkuvil, about 5 km. north of Jaffna town on Sunday.

A press release put out by the Sri Lankan Ministry of Defence (MoD) this morning said that two Liberation Tigers were killed and two SLA soldiers were wounded in a confrontation at Kokkuvil around 7.15 p.m. on June 20.

According to the pres release, the troops recovered two dead bodies of the Tigers along with some arms.

The statement further said on Sunday the troops arrested 12 persons in Mannar on suspicion and handed them over to the Mannar Police.
