The Sri Lanka Army Captain, Gerard Bernard Kelaart, who was remanded in custody for killing a Tamil woman, Kandiah Vigneswary,22, near the Murakoddanchchenai SLA camp, was released on bail by the Batticaloa Additional Magistrate today.

The woman was allegedly killed due to indiscriminate firing from the Murakoddanchchenai SLA camp on June 6. However, the SLA captain claimed that the woman died when he test fired his gun.

The suspect was allowed out on a bail of 2000 rupees cash with two sureties, furnishing a bond for 50,000 rupees.

The judge released the SLA officer on bail as the police have not filed any charges him.

The man's wife and another army officer attached to the Murakoddanchchenai camp stood as sureties.

The Additional Magistrate, K.Thadchchanamoorthy, instructed the Eravur Police to obtain the advice of the Attorney General in regard to this incident.

A further hearing was scheduled for August 9.
