Parliamentarian takes up Suthaharan case[TamilNet, Wednesday, 23 June 1999, 23:06 GMT]The member of Parliament for the Batticaloa district, Mr. Pararajasingham, has written to the president asking her to initiate an impartial investigation into the case of Nithiyananthan Suthaharan, a 19 year old youth who was admitted to hospital in an unconscious state after being arrested by Maavadivembu army personnel on June 18. He is still in an unconscious state at the Batticaloa general hospital. Mr. Pararajasingham's letter states: "In this particular case, the medical diagnosis by the doctor clearly indicates that the head of the victim, Suthaharan, had been repeatedly and severely banged against a wall or a hard surface that resulted in internal brain haemorrhage. According to medical reports, the condition of the youth is severe and critical. "Sri Lanka has been now repeatedly referred to in the reports of the Amnesty International in adverse terms and this year's observation recorded by it had been grave and condemnatory. "In the circumstances, I would urge and appeal to your Excellency that your condemnation of torture and such illegal methods of inquiries can be manifested by having an investigation conducted impartially and independently into this unfortunate and sad incident. All persons responsible for this brutal act should be brought before the law". Related Articles: 21.06.99 Youth beaten by SLA hospitalized
