Heavy fighting in Mannar

Heavy fighting broke out between the Liberation Tigers and the SLA at Neduvarampu south of the Pallamadu junction last night from 8 p.m. said sources in Mannar. Initial reports indicated that the Tigers had attacked SLA troops consolidating their defences in this area.

The Liberation Tigers are resisting a major SLA assualt on their positions at the strategic Pallamdu junction on the Mannar-Pooneryn road to Jaffna.

Heavy fighting raged south of the junction since Friday when the Liberation Tigers blocked the advance of the SLA from its positions at Paappamoddai.

The army claims it has brought Naayatruveli, 2 kilometers south of the Pallamadu (Vidaththalthivu) junction, under its control since Sunday.
