Paramilitary group unleashes violence in Batticaloa, Ampaa'rai against TNA

Paramilitary operatives of Pillaiyaan group, contesting the forthcoming election to the Eastern Provincial Council on the ticket of Colombo's ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) have been attacking the candidates and supporters of the Tamil National Alliance. The poll to elect 35 councilors to the EPC is to take place on September 8.
Pushparasa, former councilor in the dissolved EPC has been leading the terror campaign against TNA supporters and voters in the Ampaa'rai district with armed gangs. He was charged in the last PC elections in 2008 for threatening the voters, the sources further said. Meanwhile, Samurdhi officers [social service officers of the occupying Sri Lanka government] in the Batticaloa districts are instructed by UPFA politicians to participate in election propaganda of the ruling UPFA. They have been threatened by the UPFA that they would be deprived of their salary and other monetary benefits if they fail to attend election propaganda meeting favouring the UPFA.
