[TamilNet, Friday, 16 July 1999, 12:15 GMT]
Sabaratnam Baskaran (34), alias Dumaal, private secretary to Manikadasan, PLOTE's military wing leader, was killed in a claymore mine blast at Matarabaas junction; Kovilkulam in Vavuniya, at around 2 p.m. today.

Baskaran's bodyguard, Paarthan, and the group's political organiser, Kesavan Santhiran were seriously wounded in the blast said sources.

PLOTE sources said that Dumaal was riding a motorcycle with his body guard when the claymore mine fixed to a bicycle exploded.

The cycle was parked at the junction and was operated by remote control.

The incident took place opposite the Uma Maheswaran cemetery.

The attack comes as PLOTE was finalising arrangements to mark the 10th 'Veera Makkal Thinam' to remember the group's slain leader Uma Maheswaran and other cadres killed.

As a result of the bomb attack the celebration was cancelled.
