SL defence takes Jaffna University administration for a ride

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 22 January 2013, 01:26 GMT]
Genocidal Sri Lanka’s defence establishment and education secretary have secretly promised the Colombo-appointed Vice Chancellor of the Jaffna University that two of the detained students would be released before 14 January and the other two would be released after that, in order to persuade the VC and other members of the university administration to pressurize the students to drop the boycott and resume classes by the first week of January. This made the VC to go to the extent of her resignation threat and other threats to prevail upon the student representatives to agree to the reopening on 08 January. But so far there are no signs for the release of the detained students. The case is a good example for the futility of collaborationism entering into secret agreements with SL State and regime, political observers in Jaffna said.

The secret promises were made by the SL Education Secretary J.B. Dissanayake and by the Commander of the occupying Sinhala military in Jaffna, Maj. Gen. Hathurusinghe, informed sources say.

The genocidal military of Sri Lanka that unleashed unwarranted violence on the Jaffna University students who were peacefully and democratically remembering the fallen fighters on the Heroes Day in November 2012, was harping on the bargain over the release of the detained students to reopen the university and to diffuse the brunt of the crime it had committed.

Jaffna University student circles are now enraged over the silence maintained by the university administration and by the SL defence and education establishments.

There were media reports in Colombo that two of the students were released, but Jaffna University administration has so far not received any intimation about it.

In the meantime, a group of Deans from the university are once again making a trip on Tuesday to Sri Lanka’s occupying military base at Velikanda in the East, to meet the student representatives detained and are undergoing ‘military rehabilitation’ there.

The SL Education Secretary JB Dissanayake now comes out with a statement to the media that investigations are being carried out whether the four detained students had any contact with the diaspora organisations. If such contacts are proved then the student representatives would be released only after their ‘rehabilitation’, the SL education secretary said.

Genocidal Colombo wants to ‘fix’ the student representatives to absolve itself from its crimes, to intimidate the Tamil students from having any kind of contact with the diaspora, to seal them off from the diaspora which is the only genuine fall back for the Tamils in the island and to dissuade the students from voicing for anything in future, the Jaffna University student circles said, adding that the whole process is an intrigue.

According to the university student circles, the university administration headed by Prof Vasanthi Arasaratnam that stood head over toe in persuading the students to agree to the reopening is not showing that urgency in the release of the detained students.

The so-called international community once again came out with empty concerns and statements. Sri Lanka has a State and regime that didn’t care even international level allegations over a broken promise that led to a major war crime in the White Flag case. How do the collaborationists expect secret promises making any meaning with such a government and State, asked the students, adding that those who know the history of the Sri Lankan State should not again and again make the same mistake whether it is the student issue or larger political negotiations.

The French embassy in Colombo in its recent press statement made a prominent note about its ambassador visiting and meeting the Jaffna University VC, during the ambassador’s visit to Jaffna between 07 and 12 January, and hearing from the VC that the lectures had resumed.

This was the image Colombo wanted to give to the outside world, while deploying all kinds of genocidal means on the Tamil students and nation, commented political observers in Jaffna.
