Four civilians wounded in SLA fire

Four civilians were seriously wounded when the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers opened fire indiscriminately in Sunny Village, two kilometres from Mannar town, this afternoon. Four houses and a video movie parlour set on fire by marauding soldiers were burnt down completely. Several civilians were assaulted by the troops.
A youth, S.Vijayakumar, who had been beaten up severely was admitted to the Mannar hospital this afternoon. The rampage followed an attack by gunmen suspected to be Liberation Tigers near the Sunny Village SLA camp around 12.45 p.m. in which a soldier, K Sarathkumara, was killed and another identified as corporal Kumarasingha was injured. The civilians wounded in the SLA firing are V.N Lawrence 47, Mariampillai Ushananthini,24, and Velayutham Thanushkody,50. The condition of Velayutham is said to be very serious said hospital sources in Mannar. The other patients were rushed to the Vavuniya hospital.
