Cordon and search in Jaffna

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 25 November 1997, 23:59 GMT]
The Sri Lankan army launched a cordon and search operation in Kalatti, Maruthanamadam and Kondavil in Jaffna today.

Details of arrests are not available.

The SLA in Jaffna is coming under increased pressure from the Liberation Tigers. A spate of attacks on SLA patrols in the past week alone resulted in the several dozen casualties.

The attacks in various parts of the peninsula and Jaffna town have increased in intensity. In one engagement last week, SLA artillery based at Kondavil had to fire in support of ground troops.

The SLA captured the peninsula in early 1996, but the LTTE have kept up a guerilla campaign in the area since.
