Jaffna student's organisation threatens to disrupt exams; Vanni teachers not yet paid for July and Nominees named for Jaffna vacancies
Jaffna student's organisation threatens to disrupt exams An organisation called the "Jaffna Province Students Association" has warned today that it will disturb examinations in Jaffna if exams in Vanni do not take place as elsewhere in the country. This organisation has sent a copy of the appeal that was sent to President Chandrika Kumarathunge to the educational secretariat in Jaffna and to the ICRC office in Jaffna. The organisation has warned that it may disrupt the transportation of examination papers to examination halls. The examinations are to be held on coming Monday, 02.08.1999. Vanni teachers not yet paid for July Two thousand teachers in the Vanni are yet to receive their salaries for the month of July. Although Banks in the Vanni are operative there are no fax facilities. It has therefore been difficult to send the payments, said Provincial education-authorities. Nominees named for Jaffna vacancies The Election Commissioner's office in Colombo has sent the names of nominees for 41 vacancies in Jaffna local government bodies. The names on the list have been provided by the political groups in Colombo.
