Police firing damages shops

Sri Lankan police stationed at Kattankudi in the Eastern district fired shots continuously for 2 hours from midnight on Sunday, said sources in the area.

Two shops in the area were damaged due to the shooting.

Police sources said that the firing was aimed at the suspected movement of unidentified persons who may have been there to damage transformers.

Local people doubted the explanation given by police.

Fire at Batticaloa airbase

A fire that started at the south-eastern corner of the Batticaloa air base runway at about 11.30 a.m. this morning took almost two hours to extinguish, said sources.

The fire exploded two SLAF landmines that had been laid near the runway. The explosions made the fire worse.

The cause of the incident has not yet been established.
