Ignoring Sri Lanka’s sexual violence is service to ‘British foreign policy’

British monarch Queen Elizabeth II made Angelina Jolie an honorary dame for her work against sexual violence in war zones and her services to British foreign policy, media reports said on Friday. In June, Jolie co-chaired an international conference on war-related sexual violence, along with former British foreign minister William Hague. The conference was heavily criticised even by British media, for conspicuously ignoring sexual crimes committed by the Sinhala military against Eezham Tamils in the Vanni War.

Encouraged by the exclusive impunity implicitly conferred on it by the so-called ‘international community’, genocidal Sri Lanka continues to engage in the intimidation and silencing of evidences on the war crimes and on-going crimes in the island.

In January this year, The Permanent People’s Tribunal (PPT) judgement named the UK for its complicity in the genocide against Eezham Tamils during the period of the armed struggle, and named the USA for its active complicity in the genocide through “military and non-military actions.”
