Colombo constructed 463 Buddhist viharas in 2013 in North-East: TNA MP

[TamilNet, Thursday, 20 November 2014, 08:09 GMT]
At the end of the year in 2012 there were 10,349 Buddhist temples in the Northern and Eastern provinces. But, at the end of the year 2013 the figure has increased to 10,812, according to Tamil National Alliance parliamentarian from Batticaloa Seenithamby Yogeswaran. The genocidal Sri Lankan State has constructed 463 new Buddhist temples in the occupied country of Eezham Tamils in one year alone. The structural genocide on Eezham Tamils is continuing unabated with the deployment of Sinhala ‘Army and Archaeology’ by Colombo, the ‘Time and Space’ provided through the Geneva discourse by the West and is encouraged by the nexus between the ‘Hindutva’ New Delhi and the ‘Sinhala Buddhist’ Colombo, commented Eezham Tamil political observers in the East.

Mr.Yogeswaran disclosed the figures in the Sri Lankan Parliament on Wednesday during the committee stage of the 2015 budget on the SL Ministry of Buddhist Affairs.

“Hindus are now being subjected to intimidation and threat by Buddhist extremists such as Bodu Bala Sena causing dissension between the Hindus and Muslims in the country,” he was telling the SL Ministry of Buddhist Affairs.

Buddhist shrines are being ostensibly built for the ‘religious purposes’ of the occupying military and they could be found everywhere in the country of Eezham Tamils, as the Sinhala military is occupying every junction and other strategic locations.

The US draft resolution in March 2014 initially mentioned demilitarisation and then deleted it, encouraging the Sinhala militarisation in the occupied country of Eezham Tamils. The removal of demilitarisation was done with the particular intention of nullifying even the weak investigative mechanism of the OHCHR, which is avoiding focus on the decades long genocide taking place in the island, the political commentators in the East said.

“It still remains to be seen whether the OISL investigation would prove its credibility by identifying the ideology behind the genocidal intent of the Sri Lankan State,” a Tamil academic from Trincomalee said.

In an interview to TamilNet in April 2014, 84-year-old Peace Studies Professor Johan Galtung, renowned as the father of peace studies, was acknowledging that the Eezham Tamils faced genocide in 2009 and continue to face structural genocide. The Buddhist Mahavamsa Doctrine made it very difficult to find a solution and it still make it difficult, the Norwegian professor who was advocating federalism as a solution during his 34 trips to the island said.

However, Norway’s failed peace broker Erik Solheim, who still dodges the issue of genocide and detracts those who make a case of it, has surfaced again harping on equating the ‘war crimes’ of the oppressor with the liberation movement of the Eezham Tamils, Tamil diaspora activists commented.
