SL Navy assault on Mannaar Tamil fishermen condemned

[TamilNet, Sunday, 14 February 2016, 22:22 GMT]
Tamil parliamentarians, youth leaders and provincial councillors from Mannaar district have condemned the brutal attack on 2 fishermen from Pa'l'lik-kudiyiruppu, Mannaar in the seas off Naachchik-kudaa near Ira'nai-theevu on Saturday. The Sinhala navy sailors who assaulted the fishermen using knives caused serious injuries to the head of the 37-year-old helmsman of the fishing vessel while one of the three sea cucumber divers sustained minor injuries at his hand. The two injured fishermen, chased away by the SL Navy, had to drive their boat leaving behind the remaining two divers. The SL Navy later handed over the two remaining fishermen to Muzhangkaavil police belonging to Ki’linochchi district.

Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarian Selvam Adaikkalanathan, ITAK Youth Wing leader V.S. Sivakaran and TNA provincial councillors from Mannaar have condemned the SL Navy for the assault.

The Tamil fishermen have stated that they didn't deploy any prohibited method to catch sea cucumbers as the SL Navy has claimed.

Regardless of the allegation, there was no justification for the brutal conduct by the SL Navy, Mr Adaikalam Selvanathan said.

There were more than 7 SL Navy men who were behind the assault against 2 fishermen in the vessel while the remaining two fishermen were out in the sea and it is clear who was engaged in illegal work, legal sources in Mannaar said.

The SL Navy was manipulating the Sinhala police officers at Muzhangkaavil.

In the meantime, SL Navy spokesman in Colombo has gone record defending the Sinhala sailors as acting against fishermen engaged in ‘illegal’ means of fishing.

Seriously wounded fisherman Jesu Ranjith, was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital from Mannaar hospital on Saturday. His condition has now improved, according to medical sources in Jaffna.
