Colombo prison protest spreads

[TamilNet, Friday, 28 November 1997, 23:59 GMT]
Over 200 Tamil detainees detained in Colombo's Welikada prison are staging a protest fast, demanding that they are charged and their cases be heard soon. Some of them have taken to the prison rooftops to highlight their protest.

223 Tamils are said to be fasting. Twenty three are said to be sitting on the roof.

The Tamils claim that their prolonged detention without trial is unfair. Some of the detainees have been in the prison for nearly 2 years.

The has been no response from the authorities as yet.

Welikada jail became notorious when over 50 Tamil prisoners were massacred by the Sinhalese guards and prisoners during the anti-Tamil riots in July 1983.
