Racist frenzy being whipped up in South against Tamils: ITAK youth leader

[TamilNet, Sunday, 10 April 2016, 21:19 GMT]
A section of the political forces among the Sinhalese in South is attempting to project the isolated event of discovery of mines at Chaavakachcheari in Jaffna as a threat with the intention of justifying and further accelerating military occupation in the North, said V.S. Sivakaran, the youth wing leader of Ilangkai Thamizh Arasuk Kadchi (ITAK), condemning the political forces in the South and the Sinhala media for whipping up racist frenzy among the Sinhalese. The intention behind the projection by the Sinhala Establishment is to sustain the suppressive Sinhala military rule and to justify further militarisation, the youth leader from Mannaar said.

While it is quite normal, even now, to witness reports of discovery of mines from the times of World Wars, an isolated event of discovering mines in the North where a war was fought for several decades, cannot be construed as a threat of renewed war, especially when nobody is having such intention, Mr Sivakaran said, condemning the biased narratives in the media in the South.

In the meantime, political observers in Jaffna said the bias displayed by Colombo-based foreign correspondents in covering such isolated events have also contributed to the current tendency in the South.

Initially, the news of the discovery of explosives was highlighted by the SL military and police to conceal the crime of abduction and alleged rape of a 16-year-old Tamil girl by a ‘Tamil’ recruit of the occupying military.
