Sinhala police twists investigation cases on ethnic violence at Eastern University

[TamilNet, Saturday, 04 June 2016, 23:36 GMT]
One of the Sinhala students, engaged in ethnic-violence against Tamil student L. Sumeskanth on 24 May 2016 was trying to secure a medical attestation from a Sinhala doctor at a rural hospital at Chanthive'li, situated 3 km away from the Eastern University in Vanthaa'ru-moolai, informed medical sources in Batticaloa told TamilNet on Saturday. With the backing of Sinhala policemen from Ea'raavoor, the Sinhala student was admitted on the following day to the hospital where a Sinhala doctor is employed. The Sinhala student was blaming that Sumeskanth had attacked him. Ea'raavoor police filed a case against the Tamil student, who was initially attacked by the Sinhala student for posting and sharing a photo on Facebook from Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day.

The SL Police was trying to project the case as it was Mr Sumeskanth who was behind the initial attack on 24 May 2016.

The police filed the case by the Sinhala student first with complaint number B 286/2016 and the complaint filed by Tamil student received the next number, B 287/2016.

The Circuit Magistrate's Court at Ea'raavoor took the case filed by the Sinhala student for hearing at 10:00 a.m. on 01 June and the case filed by the Tamil student was taken for hearing at 2:00 p.m. by the same Court. Both the students were detained and released on surety bail.

There is a base hospital at Chengkaladi, situated around 1 km close to the University and a District Hospital 1.5 km away at Maavadi-vempu.

The SL police had adviced the Sinhala student to get a medical attest from the rural hospital situated 3 km away at Chanthive'li.

In the meantime, academic and non-academic staff of the Eastern University have confirmed that the ethnic-motivated attacks were taking place and a section of Sinhala students were behaving in a violent manner also against the academics and staff at the University. Both the students, academics and non-academic workers union have demanded the University administration to enforce disciplinary actions against the students who incite ethnic violence at the University.

Tamil students at the University have been repeatedly alleging that a section of Sinhala students were being used by the SL Military Intelligence to suppress Tamil students from articulating their democratic views inside the premises.

Mr Ramanathan Rajasekaram, the president of the Union of Non-Academic Staff, in a recent interview said it was mostly the same Sinhala students who have been inciting violence and harassments against fellow Tamil students, academics and the workers at the Eastern University.

Although it was still unclear whether the SL military was behind it, the Sinhala students were behaving as if there was an external power, which was above the administration of the University, to protect them from disciplinary actions and punishments, Mr Rajasekaram said urging the University administration to take disciplinary actions without succumbing to pressure coming from external forces.
