Attacked GS officer gets harassed while SL police pleads to drop protests

[TamilNet, Friday, 10 June 2016, 23:05 GMT]
‘Unknown’ callers, believed to be military intelligence operatives of genocidal Sri Lanka, have threatened Shanmugam Guru, the Tamil village (GS) officier who was brutally assaulted on 01 June for inquiring into illegal logging carried out by Sinhala military personnel at Kudumpi-malai, an interior Tamil village that has been subjected to demographic and structural genocide since the end of war in 2007 in Batticaloa. The calling operatives are threatening the GS officer stating that they would launch counter protests deploying some women against him with false accusations. In the meantime, the SL police officials visiting the injured GS officer to investigate the brutal assault have been politely urging the GS villager to ask his protesting colleagues to drop their protests. Kudumpimalai is situated 63 km northwest of Batticaloa city.

The anonymous callers are threatening the GS officer to drop the police case, fellow GS officials told TamilNet.

Some of the investigating officials have also urged Mr Guru to forget the incident and interpret it as a ‘bad accident’.

Initially, a few soldiers were detained, but they were all released later, legal sources in Batticaloa said.

In the meantime, ‘unknown’ operatives, who visited the family of Mrs Moothathamby Iladchumy at Kaanaanthanai village on 05 June, issued death threats to her family members blaming them as the people who had alerted the GS officer on 01 June about the illegal logging by the SL military.

The GS officers in all the 14 divisions of Batticaloa district, organised in a trade union for GS officers, demanded judicial investigation and punishment to the SL military soldiers who assaulted the GS officer who was simply doing his duty.

The union led by S. Gnansri has also demanded the SL military to refrain from interfering in civil matters.

The GS officers were wearing black clothing and rallied against the assult on 08 June.

The GS officers and the workers attached to the DS secretariat of Koara'laip-pattu South (Kiraan) division boycotted their work on 05 June, demanding immediate investigation of the Sinhala soldiers who took the GS officer to a military camp and brutally assaulted him warning Mr Guru not to interfere in the affairs of SL military.
