Ten Sri Lanka Army soldiers detained at the Jaffna prison climbed to the roof of the prison building this morning protesting at their detention in the peninsula said sources. The soldiers shouted "help us" from the top of the roof.

The soldiers demanded that they should be released on bail as their family members are unable to visit them in Jaffna, or their cases be transferred to a court in southern Sri Lanka.

Jaffna prison official S.Mariyathas said that he was not prepared to meet the protesting soldiers.

"I doubt if the Jaffna courts will release the soldiers who are charged for serious crimes on bail," he added.

The soldiers are charged among other crimes, for a murder in Kilaly and a murder of a SLA officer.
