Fourteen military trained Sri Lankan Policemen were wounded and at least four killed when the Liberation Tigers overran the Saafinagar Police detachment on the outskirts Mutur town, south of Trincomalee in the early hours of the morning today around 12.45 a.m.
According to sources in Mutur, several Police personnel had deserted their positions when the Tigers had launched the attack and that they had trekked backed to Mutur at the crack of dawn with minor injuries. The Tamilnet's Mutur correspondent said that the bodies of the dead Policemen have not yet been recovered by security forces reinforcements that rushed to Saafinagar hours after the attack because they suspected that the Tigers have booby trapped the detachment before withdrawing from the area. The condition of five wounded Policemen is serious, he said. Twelve of the wounded personnel have been rushed to the Trincomalee hospital. Saafinagar is about two kilometers southwest of Mutur town by the interior road leading to Mahaweli river and the ferry to the island of Raalkuli.
