A fifty-six-year-old father of a Tamil man subjected to enforced disappearance at the hands of the occupying SL military since May 2009 passed away due to hypertension on Tuesday. Velayutham Selvarasa was admitted at the district hospital in Vavuniyaa with high blood pressure. With his demise, the number of parents passing away since the beginning of the continuous protest has become 40 in the North-East. He is the fifth parent to die in Vavuniyaa.
Mr Selvarasa has been demanding the SL State to reveal the whereabouts of his son, Achuthan Selvarasa, whom the family had handed over to the SL Army at Oamanthai barrier on 19 May 2009. Most of the parents who have lost their lives during the last 915 days of the continuous protest are mothers, and they have died due to heart disease.
