Batticaloa SLFP organiser escapes grenade attack

A youth was killed when the Sri Lankan Police opened fire following a grenade attack on the residence of the Batticaloa Organiser of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), Rajan Mylvaganam, at Nochchimunai 4 km. south of Batticaloa town around 10.30 p.m. last night said sources.
Sources said the police rushed to the scene and shot at the youth who was seen in the area. He died on the spot, the sources added. The Police claimed the youth was a member of the Liberation Tigers and handed over his body to the Batticaloa Hospital. A walkie-talkie was recovered the police added. Mr.Rajan Mylvaganam was at his house at the time of the attack. No one was, however, wounded in the incident. The house was slightly damaged, according to the police. Later the police escorted Mr.Rajan Mylvaganam to Batticaloa town, sources said. The Nochchimunai area was cordoned off by the security forces this morning and a search operation was conducted, residents said. The SLFP is the major constituent of the ruling People's Alliance (PA).
