A young man arrested by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers at Kannakipuram in Valaichenai, 32 km. north of Batticaloa, was shot dead last night, said sources. His body was handed over by the Police to the Kalkudah hospital this morning.

Residence of the area said Kathirkamathamby Kamalanathan, 30, was arrested by the SLA soldiers along with two others at his house around 7 p.m. yesterday.

They said the soldiers shot and killed the man at Kalkudah Public Cemetery around 11 p.m. last night.

Kalkudah Police handed over his body to the hospital, sources said.

One of the other two arrested at the time came to his house this morning. He has been severely assaulted, residents said.

The fate of the third youth is not known, they added.

The SLA has a large camp in Kalkudha, 2 km. east of Kannakipuram, which is close to the Kalkudah Police station.
