President: Mandate for another term

The President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge today declared her intention of appealing to the people for a mandate to hold office for a further term, states a press release issued by the Information Department.

Accordingly, the Commissioner of Elections will call for nominations in due course, the press release issued today further states.

The proclamation by the President to this effect reads thus:-

" KNOW YE that by virtue of the powers vested in me by paragraph (3A) of Article 31 of the Constitution of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, I, Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge, President, do by this Proclamation, hereby declare my intention of appealing to the people for a mandate to hold office, by election, for a further term."

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge is scheduled to address the nation tonight, states the press release.
