Solution for conflict in two years - President

Sri Lankan President, Chandrika Kumaratunga, speaking at the first election campaign meeting held at Anuradhapura promised that her government would solve all problems in the country, including the ethnic conflict, within two years if she is elected as the next president.
Mrs. Kumaratunga said her government had not been able to carry through the peace proposals put forward by her and blamed the present constitution for it. She said the constitution, which was amended during the leadership of former president J.R.Jeyawardene, was not suitable for the country. The President said that she would have found a solution if the United National Party and the Liberation Tigers had co-operated with her government and added that her government was unable to find a solution alone. She said her new government will find a solution by changing the constitution, and appealed for a clear mandate from the voters that will enable her to do so.
