SLA shelling claims civilian

[TamilNet, Monday, 01 November 1999, 10:19 GMT]
A civilian, S.Vinayakam, 58, was killed yesterday in the farming hamlet of Kaddumurivu, 4 km. west of Kathiraveli in the Batticaloa district when a shell fired by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) hit his house said sources.

The SLA was retaliating after an ambush on Saturday by Liberation Tigers at Vamivedduvaan, 3 km. north of Vaakarai, in which two soldiers were killed and 7 wounded, the sources said.

They said several shells had hit the hamlet and added further details of damages were not known.

They said the shells were fired from the Kathiraveli SLA camp, about 15 km. north of Vaakarai. Vakkarai is 65 km. north of Batticaloa.
