PLOTE backs Kumaratunge

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 14 December 1999, 15:25 GMT]
The Peoples' Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE) has decided to support the incumbent President Chandrika Kumaratunge at the forthcoming Presidential election scheduled to be held on next Tuesday, the organisation's leadership said today.

The leader of the PLOTE Dharmalingam Siddharthan, Member of Parliament for the Vanni district, announced this decision today.

He has said in a statement that the manifesto of the ruling Peoples' Alliance is most acceptable to find a political solution to the ethnic problem, compared to the main opposition United National Party's .

The PLOTE says that as Ms Chandrika is seeking re-election, she would be placed in a better position to find a political solution, without yielding to the pressure of chauvinist elements, during her second and final term.

Under the present constitution, a person can hold the office of the President only for two terms.
