Jaffna election booths relocated

Number of polling stations in the Jaffna district have been relocated due to prevailing war situation in the peninsula, said the Assistant Commissioner of Elections S.Nadarajah.

If the present situation deteriorates, more relocation of polling stations would take place, he added.

A polling station at Ariyalai, Punkankulam Community Center has been shifted to Jaffna Kanagaretnam Maha Vidiyalayam. Polling stations at Kilali Roman Catholic Tamil School,Vembadukerni Maha Vidiyalayam, Cheranpattu Ganeshananda Vidiyalayam have been shifted to Pallai Maha Vidiyalayam, he said.

Polling stations at Maravanpulo Sakalavalli Vidiyalayam and Kachchai Government Tamil School have been shifted to Navtkuli Maha Vidiyalayam and Kodikamam Thirunavukkarasu Maha Vidiyalayam respectively, according the Commissioner.

He further said polling station at Manthuvil Sri Bharathi Vidiyalayam has been shifted to Varani Maha Vidiyalayam.

Six polling stations located in Maruthankerni Hindu Tamil School, tin the Vadamaradchi East sector have been shifted to Shri Vallipura Alvar Kovil. Likewise polling stations at Kudathanai Government Tamil School, Amban American Mission School, Nagarkovil American Mission School and Chempianpattu Government TamilSchool have been shifted to Shri Vallipura Alvar temple, according to election officials in Jaffna.

Meanwhile Sinhala officials employed at the Jaffna branch of the Co-operative Wholesale Establishment (CWE) have requested their superiors to make arrangements for them to return to the south of the island, sources said.

The sources said the CWE, Jaffna branch, is on the verge of closure. Sinhalese officials are holding key posts in the branch.
