[TamilNet, Monday, 21 February 2000, 21:31 GMT]
One-hundred sixty-four deserters reported back for duty today, accepting an amnesty offered by the Sri Lanka Army, the Operational Head Quarters of the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said in a statement.

The general amnesty for army deserters had been declared between February 21 and 27th February.

The deserters who returned to work have been re-equipped and arrangements have been made for them to rejoin their regiments, the MoD release said.

The Sri Lanka Army has announced several amnesties for army deserters in the past. However, the responses had been poor. The latest call comes as the Army launched a recruitment drive for 15,000 new recruits.
