The Liberation Tigers and the Sri Lankan Army exchanged gun and mortar fire in the early hours of the morning today on the southeastern coast of Jaffna.
Sources in the region said that the exchange lasted for almost two hours from morning 5.30 a.m. to 7.30 a.m. in Uduthurai and Vaththiraayan which are partly controlled by the Liberation Tigers. Clashes between both sides were reported yesterday and Thursday as well. Sources said that the SLA appeared to be retaliating to probing assaults on their positions by the Tigers. Mortar and gun fire was heard from morning 5.30 a.m. to 8.30 a.m. yesterday in the same area, residents further north on the coast said. The SLA's Jaffna Headquarters said yesterday that troops had fired on LTTE position in the region, causing some casualties.
