Chemmani suspects remanded[TamilNet, Tuesday, 14 March 2000, 09:43 GMT]Jaffna additional magistrate, Mr.M.Ilancheliyan, remanded three captains and a private of the Sri Lanka Army along with a Police constable today in connection with the Chemmani mass graves case. The CID informed the courts that Police constable Abdul Nasser, one of suspects on whom arrest orders were issued by the judge last month is yet to be apprehended and that two others wanted in connection with the case had died on duty. The eight suspects are alleged to have been involved in the arrest and disappearance of hundreds of Tamil civilians who are said to be buried in unmarked mass graves in Chemmani near Jaffna town in 1996. The Criminal Investigation Division of the Sri Lankan Police produced the five suspects before the Jaffna courts this morning. They had been arrested and flown to the Palaly SLA base last night by the CID. The five security forces personnel arrested and produced before the judge today are: 1.Capt. Hewa Jayatillake Lalith Thusitha Kumara 2.Capt. H.Gamage Athula Udyaya Kumara 3.Capt.Wijitha Gamage Nimal Sasitha Perera 4.Private.S. Wijesiriwardena 5.Police Constable P.A Samarawickrema. A large number of relatives and parents of the disappeared persons were present in court.
