Shooting victim identified

The Counter Subversive Unit (CSU) of the Police in Mannar told the courts today that the young man killed in a shooting incident at 'Sector 11' in Uiylankulam in the early hours of last Sunday was Thangarasa Thuraisingam(35) of Manippoorkulam, Vaddakandal.

The CSU further said that the dead man was once arrested by them on suspicion of links with LTTE and was released after inquiries.

The STF officials told the courts that they opened fire at someone trying to advance in their direction without heeding their warning order to stop around 1.40 a.m. Sunday morning.

An inquest into the death of the young man was conducted today by Caius Feldano, the Acting Magistrate.

The Police handed over Rs.24,700 and a few letters which they claimed were found in the clothes of the dead man. They also handed over a hand grenade stating that it was recovered from the youth.

Mannar Hospital sources said the body is lying at the hospital mortuary for identification by his relatives.
