The Sri Lanka Police arrested yesterday a German national in Thalahena in Negombo, north of Colombo, who had been assembling a two-seater ultra light aircraft. The mini-plane was in a factory owned by the German and was fitted with a 60 horsepower engine Police sources said.
Investigations are underway to determine the purpose for which the foreigner was assembling the mini-plane and whether he has any links with the Liberation Tigers according to an officer of the Police team handling the case. He claimed that aircraft engineers from the nearby Katunayaka Sri Lanka Air Force base who examined the mini-plane have found that it is in 'flying condition'. The Police said that the German should have got clearance from the Ministry of Defence for bringing in or importing the parts for making the two-seater aircraft.
