ICRC discusses body handover

[TamilNet, Monday, 24 April 2000, 15:26 GMT]
The Liberation Tigers have approached the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) regarding the handing over of the bodies of Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troops killed in the fighting at Yakachchi-Elephant Pass, an ICRC spokesman told TamilNet Monday.

He said the LTTE had approached the ICRC at Puthukudiyiruppu in Mullaitivu district, he said.

The spokesman said the ICRC has approached the SLA regarding the issue.

The ICRC must obtain the prior consent of the SLA to transfer and hand over the bodies of soldiers killed in action, he added.

The LTTE said earlier that over one thousand SLA troops were killed when the Tigers captured the SLA base complex at Yakachchi-Elephant Pass.
