SLMC to contest on PA list

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 23 August 2000, 09:17 GMT]
The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) has agreed to contest the forthcoming general election under the Peoples Alliance (PA) said Mr.D.M.Jayaratne, General Secretary of the PA in a statement.

Mr.Jayaratne added that the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress has agreed to file nominations through the Peoples Alliance.

"The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress has clearly and strongly pledged to continue to work within the Alliance and to give unstinted support to the government. He had discussions with the President and the leaders of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress in order to finalize the nomination lists of the Peoples Alliance. Satisfactory agreements have been reached with the SLMC in this regard" the statement said.

Referring to a statement alleged to have been made by Minister A.H.M.Fowzie regarding the SLMC, Mr.Jayaretna said that views expressed by Mr.Fowzie are entirely personally to him. It does not represent the views of the Peoples Alliance.

Mr.Jayaretna reiterated that the SLMC and its leaders have given unwavering support to continue to carry forward the policies of the President and the PA government.
