Grenade kills three, wounds six

Two civilians were killed and 6 others wounded when a grenade carried by a Sri Lanka Army soldier exploded at Kangeyan Oodai, about 10 k.m south of Batticaloa, around 3.30 p.m. Friday. The soldier was also killed in the blast, police sources said.

Nowber, 22, attached to Vavunathicu SLA camp was on leave when the grenade he had taken with him exploded, while cycling. Witnesses said the soldier was under the influence of alcohol.

Mohammed Ishhan, 8, and Amina Umma, 60 died in the incident, while Bamina,7, Subaidha,7, Mohammed Rasheed, 17, Aliyar, 65, Fathimah, 40 and Mohammed, 30 were identified as the wounded civilians. They have been admitted to Batticaloa hospital.
