Friday funeral for slain MP

The funeral of slain Batticaloa parliamentarian Nimalan Soundaranayagam, of the Tamil United Liberation Front will take place at Morokkottaanchenai burial ground on Friday evening, party officials said.

nimalan-funeral_081100.jpgThe remains of Nimalan Soundaranayagam will be taken in a procession from his residence in Valaichenai to Batticaloa Thursday morning, and will be kept at Selvanayakam Hall till Friday for viewing. The funeral cortage will leave for Morokkottaanchenai at 9 a.m. Friday and burial will take place at 4 p.m., the officials said.

Senior TULF officials and a large number of people paid their tributes to Nimalan Soundaranayagam. Shops and schools remained closed and white flags were hoisted in Valaichenai to mourn the death of the MP, said sources in Batticaloa.

Meanwhile Batticaloa District Judge who conducted an inquiry into the death of Nimalan Soundaranayagam, returned the verdict of homicide and ordered the police to conduct further investigations and to submit a report to the courts. The judge visited the site where Nimalan Soundaranayagam was killed Tuesday evening.
