Vehicle explodes near Naval detachment

An explosion in a canter vehicle killed its driver and two others who were traveling in it today in the early hours in the morning at about 2.30 am, near the Sri Lankan Naval detachment in by the port of Galle. A house nearby was damaged in the explosion.

Sri Lankan Police claim that the vehicle had come from Moneragelle and had stopped near the Naval detachment due to what appears to be a mechanical problem, and the vehicle exploded while a person in the vehicle had got under it to check the problem.

The Police alleged that vehicle was fitted with explosives by the Liberation Tigers in Batticaloa and was and was destined to Colombo.
