Two Jaffna MPs K. Rameswaran and his brother K. Ramamoorthy who split from the EPDP earlier met yesterday the Sri Lankan army's Jaffna Town commander Brig. Susantha Mendis and discussed problems regarding their security in Jaffna Town and in the islands.
The brothers claimed that the EPDP is using force to intimidate and prevent them from campaigning for the forthcoming Local Government elections. The EPDP, however holds them responsible for most of the abuses and misconduct against the civilians in the islands during the 1991-1996. The EPDP has been controlling the Islands along with SLA since 1991 after the SLA captured the Islands in 1990. The leader of the EPDP Douglas Devananda, sacked Rameswaran and his brother Ramamurthy from the group in June this year. Both brothers were members of Parliament for Jaffna and are functioning separately in Parliament now.
